The Bridge That Never Returned

The Bridge That Never Returned

In Piwoyi, Abuja, floods have not only swallowed homes but also taken away the bridge that once connected farmers to their land. What used to be a small river has turned into a wide, restless lagoon that cuts the community in half. With no help from the government, the farmers built their own solution: a single rope stretched across the water, fragile, risky, and often washed away by the current. It’s their only path to survival. This image captures two men trying to fix the rope after another flood tore it apart. They know the danger, but turning back isn’t an option. Farming is their life, and on the other side of the river lies their only source of food and income. Here, courage isn’t loud. It’s the quiet decision to cross again, even when the water remembers.
