Creator FAQ
Short answers about selling your work on ATLAS. If your question is not here, email info@rpublc.com.
Getting started
- What is ATLAS?
- ATLAS protects your creative work, finds where it is used online, and lets you sell licenses to it. ATLAS is a product of The Republic.
- What does it cost to join and list my work?
- Sign-up is free, and listing a work is free. Protection, extra scans, detailed reports and cases use a monthly plan or pay-as-you-go credits. See Pricing.
- Why must I verify my identity?
- A buyer must know that the person who sells a work owns it. ATLAS checks your ID with Veriff before you can register, protect, list or sell work. Without a verified ID, you can use detection only to search works.
- Which IDs work for the check?
- Use an international passport, a driver's license or a national ID card (in Nigeria, the plastic NIMC card). The NIN slip and the voter's card (PVC) do not work, because the check cannot read them. You also need a phone with a camera.
- What kinds of work can I upload?
- Images (JPG, PNG, WebP or GIF, up to 12 MB each) and written pieces, such as essays and stories. For a written piece, you choose what visitors can read before they license it: the full piece, the first 300 words, or the title and summary. Audio is coming soon.
Pricing and licenses
- Who sets the price?
- You do. ATLAS suggests a price for each license type, and you can keep it or change it. You can price in naira (NGN) or US dollars (USD).
- What can a buyer do with my work?
- That depends on the license type that you offer. Personal covers private, non-commercial use. Editorial covers news, education and commentary. Commercial covers a business's own channels. Advertising adds paid ads and broadcast. Merchandise adds physical products for sale.
- How long does a license last, and where does it apply?
- A license lasts one year by default. You can also offer two years, five years or perpetual. It applies worldwide unless you set a territory.
- Is a license exclusive?
- No. A license is non-exclusive unless you say otherwise, so you can sell the same work to other buyers. If you offer an "Only one buyer" (exclusive) option, only one buyer at a time can hold that license for the work.
- Who owns my work after a sale?
- You do. A buyer gets the right to use the work as the license allows. The buyer does not get the copyright, and cannot resell, sublicense or pass on the license.
- Can a buyer use my work to train AI?
- No. AI training is not part of any license. You choose work by work whether to allow it.
Money
- How much does ATLAS keep?
- ATLAS takes a 25% commission on every license. You get the other 75%. The buyer pays a 5% processing fee on top of your price, so the fee never comes out of your share. VAT is separate: 7.5% on sales by creators based in Nigeria.
On a $100 license Buyer pays (before VAT) $105 ATLAS commission (25%) $25 Processing fee (5%, paid by the buyer) $5 Your share (75%) $75 Regulatory withholding tax (5% of your share) −$3.75 You receive $71.25 - Is tax taken from my earnings?
- Yes. In line with local regulations, ATLAS withholds 5% tax (WHT) from every creator payout and pays it to the tax authority for you.
- How do I get paid?
- Add a Nigerian bank account, or connect Stripe, on your Account page. ATLAS pays you in the currency of the sale and does not convert it. Payouts are made from 3 working days after the buyer's payment clears. You can see what you sold, what is waiting and what is paid on the Licensing page.
Protection and detection
- How does ATLAS protect my work?
- ATLAS keeps a dated record of your original and a look-alike signature of the image. It adds an invisible mark to the image. Marketplace visitors see only a preview with a visible ATLAS mark and your name. A protected work uses a slot in your plan, or a one-time protection for $1 (1 credit).
- Can I still use my work after I protect it?
- Yes. Download the protected copy from the work's page and use it anywhere: your site, social media or a client. Protection does not get in the way. The protected copy carries ATLAS's invisible mark, so copies trace back to you. ATLAS works best when you register a work here before you post it online.
- How does ATLAS find copies of my work?
- ATLAS searches the web for copies of your image, including cropped, resized or edited ones. On a plan, ATLAS scans your works daily, weekly or monthly, as you choose. Without a plan, you start each check yourself.
- What happens when ATLAS finds a copy?
- You see where the copy is and how worth pursuing it is. You can then offer a license, ask for credit or ask for removal. If a case needs firmer action, ATLAS can refer it to our legal partner. A license from a case follows the same terms and split as a marketplace sale.
