Spring Maiden

Peeking out from behind a lush barrier of green bushes, a solitary lamppost suggests a hidden path. Beyond it, an immense, dark canopy of trees stretches skyward, creating a sense of the manmade enveloped by nature.

My favorite part of any durbar festival is this, the procession of warriors. A lot of people witness the durbar and only enjoy the visual spectacle, but they do not understand the significance of it all. Everything that happens at the durbar, happens for a reason. We have read so much about ancient warfare, seen many movies, but right here at the durbar ground is the closest you’ll ever come to experiencing that atmosphere of ancient battle. And God! It is daunting. These men are warriors, and they have come to salute the king. There’s so much to learn from their entrance, and even their dressing. Their numbers alone will have you shook, then the bows, the arrows, the smell of gunpowder, the smoke, the dust that escorts them. All of these would intimidate and disorient any enemy. They arrive in an ominous cloud of their own making. Their attires have black in them, so when they march in close formation and in such large numbers, they cast a shadow, the place all of a sudden, looks eerily dark. Add the thunderous sounds of the Dane guns, and the recipe is complete. These are the men who rode, and marched to defend kingdoms and to fight for territory. There are only about a thousand men in these photos, and look how strong an entrance they make. In the days of queen Amina of Zazzau, they used to be hundreds of thousands of them. Now imagine what it must have looked like, when they marched against an enemy. No wonder she won so many battles. If na you, you go stand?

The child stands unaware beneath a symbol of danger. The red flag, windblown but rooted, suggests warnings that are often unseen or ignored. The image becomes a metaphor for growing up in a world full of silent signals and the moment before understanding sets in.

Zero Malaria

Birds of Yusufari

This photograph captures the barrier between two famous rival hostels, Zik and Indy. At first glance, it is just a gate black iron, yellow pillars, and barbed wire separating two plots of land. But this gate is a powerful symbol of the relationship between its two neighbors. These hostels are rivals, their animosity fueled by their shared identity rather than their differences. The gate itself is the proof. It connects them, a single, shared boundary that brings them together even as it pushes them apart. Yet, it is also the very thing that keeps them divided, a permanent line fortified with barbed wire, turning their similarities into a source of division and conflict. It stands as a monument to both their connection and their fierce animosity.

Like the Friesian horse, a man can be beautiful. This photograph is my attempt to challenge the rigid definitions of masculinity we are handed. There is no better way in being a man. I choose not to be rigid. I choose not to succumb to the pressures of conformity. As my silhouette stands out against the water, it shows me embracing my femininity in its fullest form,an act of quiet rebellion and profound self-acceptance, even and especially in a country like Nigeria. This is my vision for "Another Nigeria": a future where we are free to define ourselves, a future that celebrates the entire, complex spectrum of our identity.
