Palette and Palimpsest

Palette and Palimpsest

This is a photograph of a decaying painting at the University of Ibadan's Institute of African Studies. It is a palimpsest—a document bearing layers of history. First, there is the original artist's vision, now faded. Upon that is a second layer: the story of time and neglect, written in cracks and dust. A third layer was added by generations of students, who inscribed their own names and marks upon it. My photograph is the final layer. A new world is possible not by erasing the past, but by reading its complex history and adding a new chapter. I found a profound, transformed beauty in this object. The students’ graffiti is not just vandalism; it is a dialogue. The piece is no longer a static relic; it is a living document of our evolving relationship with our own heritage. It proves that even when neglected, true art doesn't die. It waits for a new audience to find a new, powerful story in its beautiful ruins.
