ZANGBETỌ  Traditional guards of the night, the Zangbetọ is the indigenous police and security institutions among the Ogu people of Nigeria and other West African countries. As cultural “night-watchmen” fulfilling critical responsibilities of local vigilantism and community policing, the Zangbeto cult offers the vision of Another  Nigeria where the present menaces of insecurity and civil unrest would be things of the past. That New Nigeria is one where the safety and security of everyone, everything and everywhere is ensured through a grassroots, bottom-up approach to policing and law enforcement. Recognising that criminals and lawless people often prefer to operate under the cover of darkness, the Ogu societies instituted the Zangbetọ as the fervent torch to blow their cover and smoke them out. This prefigures the country we must all commit to building, where crime and evil will find no hiding place.

 ‎ ‎Naija in Motion envisions a future where good transport system connects people, opportunities, and dreams. Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial heartbeat, stands at the forefront of this transformation through its new urban rail system. ‎ ‎The history of rail transport in Lagos dates back to 1983, during the administration of Lateef Jakande in the Second Republic, when the idea of a modern rail-based transit system was first conceived. Today, that vision has evolved into the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT). It consists of six major lines and one monorail route, designed to serve areas of high commuter demand across Lagos and even into Ogun State. ‎ ‎As one of the world’s fastest-growing megacities, with over 22 million residents and an annual growth rate of nearly 6%, Lagos urgently needs efficient mobility. The LRMT has a projected capacity of 750,000 passengers daily, expected to rise to 1.1 million when fully operational. ‎ ‎This system is more than infrastructure, it is a symbol of hope, progress, and connection. It sets the pace of development towards a Nigeria that embraces ultramodern transport systems, fostering economic growth and moving us closer to the future we imagine.

That morning, I travelled from Ibadan to Sekona, Ede, for my friend’s newborn’s naming ceremony. On the way, I called to ask where he was, and they told me he was at the cow market, still searching for one to buy. He had just returned from Cotonou himself, tired but determined to make everything right for the day. When we finally met, we laughed, tired, honest laughter about how expensive everything has become in this country, yet how we still hold on to the small joys that keep us connected: a child’s birth, a shared meal, the sound of prayers, the rhythm of old traditions refusing to fade.  This image carries all of that, the weight and the warmth, the effort and the pause. His turned back, the attentive cow, the rough fencing. It speaks of the tenderness and burden of rural life, of people who keep going even when everything feels heavier than it used to. It’s a quiet moment that could be any morning, and every morning.

A detail many would ignore, a sprout tucked into a sock, now part of the body. It captures a local intimacy, youth culture, and the quiet poetry hidden in play. The title speaks to how the things we repeat, like Sunday football, slowly become sacred without us realizing it.  This was taken during Sunday football, fondly called Gattuso in the south, at Kolapo Ishola Estate in Ibadan. Every week, people from nearby areas gather to play, laugh, and reconnect. It reminded me of Ede, where Sunday football was never just a game but a reunion. We looked forward to it all week, knowing we’d see old friends home for the weekend from school or work.  It’s funny how something so ordinary can hold so much memory, the laughter, the dust, the sunset, and the feeling of being exactly where you belong.

It sustains local economies, empowers women, and preserves an identity deeply rooted in culture. It’s this heritage that shapes who we are.

The identity of a place lies with its people and lives they live. Heritage, culture ,belief and struggle are essential ingredients in shaping the thinking of people of a region. Nigeria has had her fair share of ups and downs . The glories of the past and the fleeting hope for  tomorrow. Nigeria in her glory stood tall among the world’s best,  serving as a dawn of a new age ,  and fierce in the faces of adversity and injustice, both home and abroad. But decades of regressions is enough to discourage her people on the possibility of a better tomorrow. Nigeria remains Nigeria, and the gallantry and resilience of its people did not wane. The everyday challenges could distract us of our inherent identity but what if another perspective is revealed for us to see, the vestige of old architectures, the resplendence of our cultures, folklores that comes to life, clusters of people with shared interest, patterns from the sky, beauties of nature ,unique landscapes and communities that holds nostalgic memories.  Another Nigeria exists and is ever present but its only revealed when we are ready to see it, to guide us towards an optimistic future.
