For Republic writers

Frequently Asked Questions for Republic Writers

  1. 1.What is ATLAS?

ATLAS is a platform developed by The Republic to help creators license their work, manage permissions and earn income from their creativity. It now supports written work, including journalism, essays and fiction.

  2. 2.Do I have to pay to join?

No. Creating an account and listing your writing on ATLAS are free.

  3. 3.Can I list work that wasn't published in The Republic?

Yes, and we encourage you to. You can list essays, articles, stories and other writing published independently or elsewhere, provided you hold the rights necessary to license them.

You can also choose how much of each work potential buyers can preview.

  4. 4.How much will I earn?

    There are two arrangements:

    Work published independently or elsewhere

You receive 75% of the licensing fee. ATLAS receives a 25% commission.

Work first published in The Republic

ATLAS receives a 25% commission. The remaining 75% is shared between you (40%) and The Republic (60%).

For example, on a $100 licence:

    Earnings on a $100 licence
    Your earningsATLASThe Republic
    Independent or previously published elsewhere$75$25—
    First published in The Republic$30$25$45

These figures are before applicable taxes.

  5. 5.Who decides how much my work costs?

You can set your licensing prices for independently listed work. ATLAS provides suggested prices that you can accept or change.

For Republic-published stories, licensing prices and terms are managed under The Republic's existing publishing arrangements.

  6. 6.Will I lose ownership of my work?

No. Listing a work on ATLAS does not transfer copyright to ATLAS or a buyer. Buyers receive permission to use the work under the agreed licensing terms.

Licences are generally non-exclusive, meaning a work can be licensed to multiple buyers.

Your existing publishing agreements continue to apply.

  7. 7.When can my Republic stories be licensed?

Stories first published in The Republic become eligible for licensing after the 120-day period specified in our author agreements.

You can list other eligible work without waiting for this period, subject to any existing publishing restrictions.

  8. 8.How do I get started?

We've created an ATLAS account for you.

Simply follow your invitation link to claim your account, complete identity verification and review your eligible works.

You can then activate eligible Republic listings and upload additional writing you'd like to make available for licensing.
